Calvin's turn to visit the hospital

We have another first to report in the Stewart household, but we do so with some dismay.

First broken bone.

Er, bones.

Calvin tumbled off a play structure Saturday and tried to land hands-first. It didn't go well. We made a quick stop at home to pick up blankie and headed to the emergency department. Calvin broke both bones in his right arm, and spent a marathon 9 hours or so at the hospital, getting home close to 3 a.m.

The kid had spent the last two days of school home with a stomach bug, one that infected two more of us, and we had been enjoying our restored health Saturday by spending it outside. Glad we got the mini-golf in early!

Calvin was as good as you could hope for, with Doug by his side the whole, long night -- aside from when they put him under to set the bones. He was greatly cheered by the present of a purple platypus from the hospital (he now has two! different stuffed platypi)  and a viewing of Scooby-Doo Meets Batman. He spent Sunday morning watching TV, and slept through the Packers game (we're going to the Super Bowl!) and a visit from friends with a get-well-soon gift.

Don't let that mopey face fool you. Despite the soreness and lethargy, he's looking forward to sharing his news at school tomorrow. I'm trying not to worry that my already-reluctant writer won't be able to write at least until he gets to ditch the sling in three weeks or so. Swim classes are on hold, but he might be able to play baseball again this spring.
