Kindergarten!

It's official! Our boy now attend elementary school. Devon started right after Labor Day in Senora LeMieux's all day kindergarten class. He really likes his teacher, and he enjoys being in kindergarten. He said he "loves everything about kindergarten....except for all the Spanish." The immersion element is challenging him, which is probably good for him. However, he's definitely starting to pick some of it up. I'm trying to learn some along with him...trying to make it fun at home without him feeling like he never gets a break from the Spanish. He loves gym class (3x a week) and loves the freedom of the cafeteria (lots of choices!).

He also goes to before and after school care at the school. He was looking forward to starting that even more than kindergarten - it's called "Adventure Club" and that name just might have led to some false expectations for him. It's proving to be a bit overwhelming though - they have lots of kids, ranging in age from kindergarten through 5th grade, and there is an atmosphere of somewhat controlled chaos. They have lots of activities...and I think he'll like it once his confidence increases a bit. He's feeling a bit shy still...as he makes more friends, I think he'll enjoy all of it.

It's always fun to see the world through the eyes of a young child. Devon had homework his first week, where he was instructed to color in a little picture and to write down his hopes and dreams for kindergarten. When I explained the assignment to him, and inquired about his hopes and dreams, he eagerly exlaimed "to get a pet dragon!". This was followed up quickly with "to build a real house completely out of gummy bears." Acknowledging that these were lovely hopes and dreams, I suggested that he might also want to think about some hopes that might actually come true during kindergarten. His response: "to discover something new." I'm hoping that this one comes through for him, and that he loves this year!
