Devon has always been a fan of the big man, and welcomes changes to visit with him. Rather than using that time to make gift requests, he takes every opportunity to inquire as to his "list status" (i.e., naughty or nice). Rylee, on the other hand, finds Santa terrifying. Early in the holiday season, much to Devon's horror, she decided that she didn't want him to come on Christmas eve ("he's too scary"). We have all been respecting her fear, while engaging in some social marketing to convince her that he's really nice.
This year, we went to see Santa at Macy's in downtown Minneapolis, where the kids can also see a cool Christmas display. We took Devon last year, and decided to bring Rylee along this year. When we told Rylee that we were going to the display, we told her that she absolutely did NOT need to go see Santa if she didn't want to and that we could wait outside while Devon went in. While waiting in line, she announced "I won't sit on his lap, but I'll shake his hand and wish him a Merry Christmas." And she did. And when Santa didn't bite, she said that she wanted to be in the picture...but only if she could sit far away. And she did.
