We're very proud of Calvin, who helped organize a book drive to support the Gift of Reading. We've long supported this program, which distributes books to underprivileged children and classrooms with slim libraries. (It's sponsored by my former employer, the Mercury News.)
Calvin pitched the idea to his teacher and the principal, helped distribute flyers, and collected books at his classroom. Last weekend, we delivered 300 books! He was very proud, and says he wants to collect even more next year.
Finn is focused on Santa. Here he is all dressed to go to Doug's office to distribute candy canes — alas, everyone had already bolted for the holidays, so Finn made do by visiting some neighbors. He even made a naughty/nice list. Many of his classmates made the "nice" list. The Hulk, however, is filed under "naughty."
The boys wrote sweet letters to Santa. Finn, who is just learning to put words onto paper, patiently wrote a lengthy note requesting lots of Legos, and assuring Santa, "I try my best to be good." Calvin had a numbered list of 10 items (including a BB gun and "a robot to tell me answers to everything") but generously listed "surprise me" as items 6 and 7.
Our shopping is done (mostly), our crafting and baking is finished (mostly), and our packages have shipped (mostly). What isn't done now probably won't be done before Christmas, and we're content with that. If one last gift from us meanders to your home after the holiday, we hope you understand. We get better each year at less stress, more joy, and we hope you all are able to set aside some of the things on your to-do lists and enjoy this time of year with people you love.
